Notice

A door hanger or written notice was left at your property by a Porter County Assessor field specialist. You are required to complete this survey within 30 days of the date noted on that notice. Failure to respond may result in an estimated assessment based on available data.

What is the Online Door Hanger?

Indiana counties are required under IC 6-1.1-4 to periodically assess all real property at its true tax value. As part of this process, the Porter County Assessor's Office conducts routine field inspections to verify and update interior property characteristics information that directly affects your property's assessed value and, in turn, your tax bill.

When a field data collection specialist visits your property and is unable to gain entry, they leave a physical door hanger notice requesting that you complete this survey. The Online Door Hanger (ODH) is the electronic version of that survey, allowing you to conveniently submit your interior property information such as finished square footage, number of rooms, heating and cooling systems, recent improvements, and construction quality from any device, at any time.

Once submitted, your information is reviewed by Assessor staff. If the data differs materially from the current assessment record, corrections may be applied consistent with Indiana's Cost Approach valuation model. You will be notified of any resulting changes to your assessed value.

What to Expect

1 Find your property. Use the search below to locate your parcel by owner name, address, or parcel number. Select your property from the results to confirm it before proceeding.

2 Complete the online form. You will be directed to a secure online form hosted via Jotform. Have your door hanger notice handy, it contains your parcel ID and inspection date.

3 Provide interior details. Respond to questions about your home's interior features: finished area, room counts, basement finish, HVAC, fireplaces, recent additions, and overall condition. Photos may be uploaded to support your responses.

4 Submit and receive confirmation. After submission you will receive a confirmation number. The Assessor's office will review your responses typically within 15-30 business days.

Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Why did the assessor visit my property?
Porter County is conducting its state-mandated reassessment cycle. Field specialists visit properties to verify interior data on record. In 2026, the residential reassessment focus includes Center Township. If a specialist could not gain entry, you were left a door hanger requesting this survey.
What happens if I don't respond?
If no response is received within 30 days, the Assessor's office may estimate interior characteristics based on comparable properties and available permit records. This could result in an assessment that does not accurately reflect your home's actual condition. Responding ensures your data is considered.
Will this change my property taxes?
Your response is used to verify or correct the data underlying your assessment. If the submitted information differs significantly from the current record, an adjustment may be made which could increase or decrease your assessed value. Any change will be communicated via a Notice of Assessment Change.
Is my information secure?
Yes. The online form is hosted on a secured, encrypted platform. Your property data is transmitted directly to the Porter County Assessor's office and is not shared with third parties except as required by Indiana's Access to Public Records Act (APRA).
What if I need help completing the form?
Please contact the Porter County Assessor's office at (219) 465-3461 or visit 155 Indiana Avenue, Suite 209, Valparaiso, IN 46383. Office hours are Monday-Friday, 8:00 AM-4:00 PM. You can also email assessor@porterco.org.
I accessed this page from the Map or Property Search, do I still need to search?
If you arrived here by selecting a parcel from the Engage Map or Property Search pages, your property is already identified and will be carried forward automatically. The search below is only needed if you navigated directly to this page without first selecting a parcel.
